two-story New England home was built by John Keyes in 1860 for his bride,
Clara McIntire, a native of New Hampshire. After the death of John Keyes in 1875,
Clara married Edward C. Voorheis, an eminent mining man and financier,
who later became a state senator. Their daughter, Gertrude, lived in the house most
of her life and contributed to political and civic causes in the state as well as in
Amador County. This home became the Sutter Creek Inn, opening with its
unique hospitality in May, 1967. Each morning a hot breakfast is served in the
large kitchen in front of the fireplace. During the summer, long breakfast tables are
set outside under the grape arbor. The Inn has an intimate atmosphere for
discriminating guests.
