BILTMORE HOUSE & GARDENS: 2 Miles South of Asheville, North
Carolina. "America's Finest Home", was built by George W. Van-
derbilt, from 1890-95, on 125,000 acres of magnificent forests
and hills, in western North Carolina. In French Renaissance
style. Biltmore House contains 250 rooms, extensively furnished
with fine paintings, tapestries, antique furniture, and sculpture.
Surrounding the mansion is a 35-acre garden complex, contain-
ing many rare and beautiful plants. In 1917, about 86,000
acres of the original Estate were deeded to the Federal Govern-
ment, to help establish Pisgah National Forest. Later, more land
was set aside, for the development of Biltmore Forest, a com-
munity of beautiful homes. The Biltmore Dairy Farms occupy
about 4,000 of the 12,000 acres remaining in the Estate. The
famed herd numbers some 1400 registered Jerseys. Typical
of the rooms, open to the public, is the walnut-paneled Library
(73' x 34' x 30'), which contains 20,000 volumes. Included, are
many fine works on architecture, art, literature and landscape
architecture. The magnificent ceiling (from an Italian palace) is
attributed to Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini (1675-1741).
