THE TOWER OF LONDON AND TOWER BRIDGE:
The Tower of London, founded by William the Conqueror,
has in its long history been a fortress, a royal residence and
a state prison. It is here that the Crown Jewels are guarded.
Tower Bridge -"the gateway to London"- was built in
1886-94 at a cost of over £1,000,000, at that time a very
considerable sum of money. Each of its two bascules
weighs 1,000 tons, and can be raised in just over a minute
to allow vessels to pass to and from the sea.
