NO. 86. THE EVACUATION OF RICHMOND, VA.
NIGHT OF APRIL 2, 1865.
After holding Richmond until the last possible moment
General Lee issued orders to General Ewell to evacuate the
city on April 2nd, 1865.
This famous picture illustrative of the withdrawal both
by a division of the Army of the Northern Virginia and many
citizens (taken from the Manchester side) depicts the crossing
by the old Mayo Bridge.
While removable crops, such as tobacco, cotton, grain,
etc. were put to the torch by orders, many buildings, ware-
houses etc. were fired by rioters and incendiaries, a fact not
to be wondered at when it is realized that every able bodied
fighting man was under arms at the front, and cadets barely
in their teens and convalescent soldiers alone remained to
police the City.
