Additional Details:
The Newport News-James River Bridge is one of the James River Bridge System, which is the longest in the world, leaping the historic James River, at its mouth, four and one-half miles, connecting Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and the Virginia Peninsular and South Side. Has the largest lift span in existence, being three hundred feet wide, one hundred and fifty feet high, and weighs three million pounds. It was built in 1928 at a cost of six million dollars, and saves many hours of time in travel in the Hampton Roads area. Crossing the bridge one has a complete view of the field of activities of the conflict between the Merrimac and Monitor
