Santa Fe, New Mexico, the oldest city and the oldest capital in the United States, is encircled by a number of old Spanish mission, which, while less known than those of California, are more picturesque, and indeed the most interesting structures of the kind on this continent. A number of them date from the time when the Spanish missionaries entered this territory with the conquering soldiers, while others were built as thank offerings for the victories which restored the Spaniards to power after the bloody Indian revolution of 1680. |
