No. 92. THE UNION ARMY
IN THE HEART OF THE CONFEDERACY
(Courtesy Leslie's Weekly - Copyrighted)
The burning of Richmond at the evacuation added a
crowning horror to the multitudinous anxieties and privations
its inhabitants had endured during the three years the city
was the Capital of the Confederate States. While the
conflagration was at its height the U. S. forces, under com-
mand of Maj. Gen. Godfrey Weitzel, entered and took
possession of the stricken city. The sketch presents a view
of 11th and Main Sts., looking East, and shows the facade
of the then Exchange Bank of Virginia, the only portion of
the building to escape destruction. The restored building is
now the property of and occupied by the First National
Bank of Richmond, Va.
