It was meant to be the largest West of the Mississippi. The
Cathedral Facade was inspired by Eglise de la Trinite Church
of Holy Trinite in Paris. Construction was started in 1886,
completed in 1889, at a cost of $250,000.00. The dome is
175 feet high and the center spire 216 feet. Patrick Monague,
the first bishop of the Sacramento Diocese moved the see from
Grass Valley to Sacramento. The Bonanza Kings of the comstock
gave large sums to finance the building.
