Dr. King was the most popular Negro leader in
America. He was president of the Southern Chris-
tian Leadership Conference and co-pastor of the
Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. King
first attracted national attention as president of
the Montgomery, Ala. Improvement Association,
where he led a successful boycott against seg-
regated seating on city buses. He cooperated
with the Alabama Christian Movement for Human
Rights in Birmingham to end several phases of
segregation there. (This picture shows Dr. King
