PRINCE PHILIP RACES
BLOODHOUND
AT
COWES
Cowes, seaport on the
estaury of the River Medina,
the north coast of the
Isle of Wight, is a world
famous yachting centre and
headquarters of the Royal
Yacht Squadron Cowes
Regatta Week is one of the
major events on the British
racing calendar and over
many years Prince Philip's
yacht Bloodhound has taken
part. Here he is seen racing
her at the Cowes Regatta of
August 1962, with Britannia
in the background. There is
an intriguing link between
the two vessels, since King
George V's J-class racing
yacht one of the bigger
classes
now virtually
abandoned due to rising
building costs was also
named Britannia. The first
British yachts were the
Mary and the Bezan, both
presented to King Charles II
by the Dutch at his Restor
ation, and the word yacht
(jagt) is of Dutch/Friesian
origin, meaning to pursue or
make haste.
