The 100th Anniversary of the Death
of
George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr.
February 14, 1859 -- November 22, 1896
George Ferris' greatest engineering accomplishment
was the Ferris Wheel at Chicago's World Columbian
Exposition in 1893. Two hundred and sixty four feet tall,
each of the giant wheel's 36 cars carried 60 passengers.
Before the Exposition closed, nearly a million and half
people paid 50 cents for a twenty minute ride. And since
then, amusement wheels worldwide that carry people up,
over the top, and down, have been called Ferris wheels.
