Additional Details:
The Bridge to Goat Island is one of the sights of Niagara. It is a beautiful structure and takes the place of several previous crude wooden affairs that served as passage way the past three quarters of a century. The first Bridge was erected in 1870. It was carried away by the ice the following Spring. Other bridges were erected in 1818, 1839, 1849 and 1856. The piers were formed first by building a massive abutment of timber on the water's edge, from which were projected enormously long and heavy beams of timber. These were secured by great piles of stone, and their outer ends rendered steady by stilts thrust into the bottom of the river. A platform was then built, loaded with stone and sunk, and on this a pier was built
