It all began in the early 1540's when an adventurous band
of Spanish Conquistadores visited an Indian Pueblo
standing on the present day site of Socorro. The mar-
velous climate, the friendliness of the Indian peoples,
and the abundant natural resources convinced the Spanish
that here is a place worth keeping. The King of Spain
designated it "The town of Socorro Grant" several
decades before the Pilgrims landed.
