Portales, New Mexico
Portales has a population of over 10,000 within
the city limits and a trade territory that in-
cludes some 25,000 people. The most impor-
tant single development of the city was the
establishment of Eastern New Mexico Univer-
sity. It remains an important ranching and agri-
culture center, but also boasts the states largest
dairy industry, producing one-fourth of the
milk consumed in New Mexico.
