The Cardenas at Trinidad, built of stone and concrete in the impressive style of the Old California Missions, is named after Don Garcia Lopez de Cardenas, a captain of Coronado's army which left Mexico in 1540 on his expedition of conquest. It is said that Cardenas was the first white man to behold the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizona. Trinidad is the largest wool and hide shipping point in Colorado. It is the center of immense coal, coke and iron industries. At Trinidad begins the ascent of the Raton Pass. |
