STATUES OF GENERALS REYNOLDS AND BUFORD. On the
Chambersburg pike, and several hundred yards north of the
spot where he was killed July 1st, the State of Pennsylvania
has erected an equestrian statue to the memory of General John
F. Reynolds. The heroic statue in this illustration is a memo-
rial to General John Buford, who, as commander of the advance
cavalry force, brought on the battle. The cannon projecting
from the pedestal of Buford's statue in the direction he is
facing is the gun that fired the opening shot.
