Length of trail, 15.72 miles.
Distance from Charlemont bridge to Whitcomb
summit, 9.6 miles.
Elevation at summit, 2172 feet above sea level.
Highest per cent. grade, 7.5.
Work was begun in September, 1912, and com-
pleted November, 1914.
Total cost of construction was approximately
$345,000.
Trail passes over Hoosac mountain, thru which
runs the Hoosac Tunnel, the longest tunnel on
the American continent, length 4% miles.
The Mohawk Trail follows the pathway trod by
the Indians over the mountain in their travels be-
tween the Hudson and Connecticut valleys.
From Whitcomb summit inspiration points can
be seen : Mt. Greylock, 3505 feet, the highest point
in the state of Massachusetts; also, Mt. Monad-
nock, New Hampshire, 3718 feet high.
From "Hairpin Turn," western slope, a beauti-
ful view is obtained of the Stamford valley, look-
ing up into the state of Vermont, and the city of
North Adams, which extends to you a Hearty
Welcome.
