Michigan state auto ferry "City of Petoskey." So named for the thriving community located on the shore of Little traverse Bay, about 38 miles South of Mackinaw City; population 6,000. The Ferry was placed in service May 25, 1941. The name Petoskey comes form the Chippewa name "Pe-To-Se-Ga," which in the Indian tongue means "The Rising Sun."
