Additional Details:
Some time before Calico, the town, was named, the district was known as the Calico Hills, due to coloring of the soil and rocks. The miners called a meeting to name the town. Gathering around the traditional keg of refreshments, names of Buena Vista, Calico, Silver Gulch and Silvery Canyon were suggested, but when Shorty Peabody offered a toast "lets name her Calico boys, Shes as purty as a gal's calico dress," Calico became a town in name. H. Hartman and M. Lawrence filed the first claims on March 26, 1881 but mining had been going on some time before this date. Silver was found as far away as Goldstone, now in the Camp Irwin area
