MAIN STREET - CALICO, CALIFORNIA
Unlike other Western Silver Camps, Calico is one that was never
worked out. With the drop in the price of silver the camp kept
going with borax. One story is that the town was named by a
miner, Shorty Peabody, who offered a toast "Let's name her
Calico boys, she's as purty as a gal's calico dress!" From the
district over $80 million in silver was taken out with the Silver
King credited as having produced $10 million. As a western
mining town Calico was remarkable for law and order. The
first mining claim was filed on April 7, 1881, but mining had
taken place for some time. ...M.P.
