Far beyond the gloomy and forbidding river
gorge, where, through twelve miles of space, looms
the north wall of the canyon in all its grand sym-
metry of cliff and terrace, we note as our eyes be-
come more accustomed to the variety of form and
color a towering gateway opening away into a deep
and dizzy gulf that recedes far into Kaibab Plateau.
This is the Bright Angel Amphitheatre, a noble
canyon valley two or three miles wide, fifteen miles
in length, and deep as the main canyon itself, and
second only to it in imposing grandeur. Through
its center flows Bright Angel Creek, the Colorado's
most beautiful tributary.
