of Van Ness Avenue and O'Farrell
Street. Old St. Mary's on California
Street and Grant Avenue (once the Ca-
thedral church) was prey for the flames
in 1906. Only the walls were left, but
they were so well built that they escaped
injury and the church was restored on
its old lines.
