GEORGE BEST
(Manchester United,
1974)
years, he brought a magical quality
to soccer and became the idol of
thousands. At his peak he can be
unplayable, his balance and ball
control taking him swerving through
packed defences. Born in Belfast on
May 22nd 1946, he made his
League debut with Manchester
United against West Bromwich
Albion in November 1963, and his
International debut for Northern
Ireland only five months later. In 361
League appearances for United he
scored 137 goals, gaining League
Championship medals in 1964/65
and 1966/67, and a European Cup
winners medal in 1968. Retired
prematurely, at least in part due to
the pressures of fame.
