JACK CHARLTON
(England, 1968)
Brother to Bobby Charlton of
Manchester United, and a first-class
centre-half for both Leeds United
and England. Strong in the air both
in defence and attack. Often to be
found standing on the opposition's
goal line during a Leeds corner kick.
Charlton was a dominant figure in
the Leeds side that monopolised
English soccer in the late sixties and
early seventies. (Besides winning
the League Championship in 1968/
69 and again in 1973/74, Leeds
were runners-up in 1964/
65, 1965/66, 1969/70, 1970/
71, 1971/72). He made 629 appear-
ances for Leeds between 1952 and
1973, then became Manager for
Middlesbrough until 1977, the club
gaining promotion to Division 1
in his first season there (1973/74).
He is now Manager of Sheffield
Wednesday.
