Christopher or “Kit” Carson, as he was known
in the early days of the west, was born in Ken-
tucky in 1808. He migrated to Colorado and
New Mexico in 1827 and from that time until the
United States Army, under General Kearney,
made their expedition into the Southwest, he
trapped and hunted from the Arkansas River to
the Pacific Coast. For many years he was in
the employ of the United States Government as
a scout and guide and it was he who led the way
for General Fremont. He died May 23rd, 1869,
and is buried in the pueblo of Taos, New Mexico.
