OAK KNOLL, HOME OF POET WHIT-
TIER, DANVERS, MASS. This was the best-loved
home of the gentle
Essex County poet, John Greenleaf Whit-
tier, dear to all American hearts and particularly to those of
New England, whose scenery and folk-lore he portrayed so
faithfully in undying verse. A charming spot, on a little rise
of ground, in the midst of a picturesque grove of trees. An
ideal home for a poet. Here Whittier passed each winter sea-
son, amid the scenes he loved so well and surrounded by an
adoring and appreciative people.
