Going down Bright Angel Trail, one
gains an abiding sense of the real pro-
portions of the Canyon. For the first two
miles the descent is a sort of a Jacob's
Ladder, zig-zagging at an unrelenting
pitch. At the end of two miles a com-
paratively gentle slope is reached. Then
the final trail begins through the Granite
Gorge towards the Colorado River.
