The importance of the position was seen early in the battle and it was fortified as a rallying point. Of the original fortifications the luneties around the guns remain intact. Here occurred that memorable conflict known in the history of the Gettysburg battle as the "Louisiana Tiger's Charge." The equestrian statue represents General Hancock in the attitude of rallying the defeated troops of the First and Eleventh Corps on the evening of July 1st
