CORRESPONDENCE.
NATIONAL CEMETERY, GETTYSBURG, PA.-This plot con-
tains 17-acres and is on the high ground just south of the town.
It was purchased and arranged by a Commission of men of the
northern states and maintained by those states until 1873, when
it was transferred to the government. Here were buried 3555
men who were killed in the battles around Gettysburg; the ad-
ditional burials in recent years have raised the total to 3650.
The dead are buried in sections of semicircular form, the sol-
diers' monument being in the center. The New York State
monument shows to the left.
