EYRE SQUARE, GALWAY: Built where the River Corrib flows into
Galway Bay, this City of the Tribes traces back to the 13th century. Its
focal centre is Eyre Square, originally an open space in front of the main
city gate. The John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial Garden was laid in 1965-66
The Browne Doorway is a reminder in stone of Galway's many ancient
links with Spain. The 1936 memorial to Padraig O'Conaire honours this
famous Galway-born Irish writer.
