The Academy of Richmond County, Georgia,
The original building was on the river bank
and it was that building George Washington visited when he was
in Augusta. This building was erected in 1803 and was used
continuously until 1927 when a new and larger building in the
upper part of the city was constructed. The Academy of Richmond
County is the oldest institution for the higher education of boys
that has been in continuous existence under the same name and in
the same place in the United States. It is erected upon crown
lands confiscated after the Revolutionary War.
