by Daniel Chester French, Concord, N. H. DANIEL WEBSTER--American statesman born Salisbury (now Franklin) 1782. Entered Dartmouth College at 15, soon at head of class. Admitted to the bar 1805. Served N. H. as congressman 1813-1817. Moved to Boston and reentered the House 1823, where he became the greatest orator of his time, opposing Henry Clay. Went to U. S. Senate in 1827 and served most of the time between 1830-1850. Sec'y of State 1841-1843. Died at Marshfield, Mass. Oct. 24, 1852
