EWELL METHODIST CHURCH AND PARSONAGE P72375
Smith Island, Maryland
Smith Island was charted by Capt. John Smith in 1608
and settled in 1657 by dissenters from St. Clements
Island in the Potomac River. Joshua Thomas, "Parson
of the Islands", converted many to the Methodist
individualistic islanders
faith. The hardy and rugged
are deeply religious, and community life is church-
oriented.
