GREAT STONE FA
20552
On that primal morn when the world was young,
When the morning stars in their courses sung,
Fair was his face, like a God's in sooth,
Aglow with the color and life of youth.
He saw the first stars that emblazoned the skies;
Saw the radiant dawn of the first sunrise:
Saw primitive men with their primitive Eves.
Drest in wild skins and bright hued leaves.
He saw the dread deluge rise and rise
Till it hid the world from his horrified eyes;
He saw the purged world emerge from the flood;
Saw the rainbow that sealed the promise of God.
He saw the earth quickly peopled again
With teeming cities, and towns, and men;
He saw their battles, contentions, and strife,
Their struggles for fame, and wealth, and life;
And his face grew stern as he saw men's ways,
And his sad eyes hardened to a petrified gaze.
