THE MAXWELL HOUSE, one of Nash-
ville's leading hotels, was begun in 1859, and
completed ten years later. During the Civil
War it was in a partially completed state and
was used for barracks. It was known as the
Zollicoffer Barracks. In 1915 it was complete-
ly re-modeled, and is today one of the South's
leading hotels.
