THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
is engaged in making topographic and geologic maps of the
United States, Alaska, and Hawaii; in investigating and
reporting on the nation's mineral deposits-metals, coal,
oil, potash, water, etc.; in classifying the public lands and
advising as to their wisest use and in supervising opera-
tions on leased public lands; in measuring the flow of the
principal streams and in preparing data for power devel-
opment, irrigation, and flood control; and in publishing
reports and maps for the benefit of engineers and mining
men, students, and the general public.
