Ben Nevis is the giant of Scottish mountains and is
situated in Inverness-shire. It is remarkable as being the
highest point of Great Britain, attaining an altitude of
4,406 feet. In the year 1883 an observatory was erected
on the summit by the Scottish Meteorological Society, and
for the convenience of climbers a hotel has been built in
its vicinity. The magnificent view of the surrounding
country obtained from the top well repays the labour
of the ascent.
