The main terminal in San Francisco of the San Fran-
cisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is a mile west of shore, due
to the height of the upper bridge deck. This distance
was required to gain ground level at a 3% grade. This
double decked $77,000,000.00 bridge stretches across
the largest navigable body of water ever bridged.
The upper deck, 58 ft. wide, is divided into six auto
lanes. The lower will carry three truck lanes and two
train tracks. Main spans are 2320 ft. long with a
vertical clearance of 185 ft.
