| Mt. Vernon was inherited by George Washington in 1752, the first foundations having been laid by his father about 1736. The mansion is built of wood, mainly after the style of a French chateau of the time of Louis XIV. Here Washington died on December 14th, 1799, and his tomb, a plain but solid brick structure with an iron gate, stands near the mansion. The entire domain of about six acres is the property of the nation, having been purchased in 1856 for $200,000. |
