MARSHALL HOUSE
MARSHALL HOUSE, AS IT WAS IN 1861, ALEXANDRIA, VA.
Back:
The Ordinance of Secession was ratified by the people at
an election held Thursday, May 23rd, 1861.
The Federal troops entered and the Confederates evacuated
on the morning of Friday, May 24, about day break. Col.
Ellsworth with a squad of his Zouaves repaired at once to the
Marshall House to capture the only Confederate Flag flying in
the city. Having secured the Flag, he was proceeding down
the stairs when Mr. James Jackson, Proprietor of the House,
> came from his bed room, double barrel shot gun in hand and
instantly killed Col. Ellsworth--as he was about to discharge
Q the remaining load, Corporal Brownell knocked the gun in the
air then shot and bayoneted Jackson to the floor, killing him
instantly.
