ENGINE "GENERAL" STANDING IN UNION
DEPOT. This famous engine, which played such an im-
portant part in the Civil War, occupies a prominent place in
the Union Depot. The General'' was captured by 22 Federal
soldiers in disguise, under the leadership of James J. Andrews,
April 12, 1862; an attempt was made to escape with her, burn
the railroad bridges and thus cut off the Confederate army's
supplies, but the raid was unsuccessful and the engine was
abandoned.
