Additional Details:
The Hope Indians of the province of Tusayan in northern Arizona are a people of many religious ceremonies. The most dramatic being the Snake Dance. This ceremony lasts nine days, the snake dance proper occuring on the ninth or last day. On this day live snakes are carried in the mouth while the dance is in progress, then powdered with sacred meal and liberated to carry messages to the gods who have power over the rain clouds. In this arid country most all the ceremonies of the aborigines have to do with the rain
