The Hopi Indians of the province of Tusayan in
northern Arizona are a people of many religious

Dance. This ceremony lasts nine days,-the snake
dance proper occuring on the ninth or last day. On
this day live snakes are carried in the mouth while
the dance is in progress, then powdered with sacred
meal and liberated to carry messages to the gods
who have power over the rain clouds. In this arid
country most all the ceremonies of the aborigines
have to do with the rain.
