This picture shows the depth and arrange-
ment of the shell heaps at Damariscotta, the
greatest kitchen midden known. This deposit
was prehistoric. Thoroughout were ashes, stone
implements, pottery and bones of all kinds,
even human. The heaps were partially ex-
ploited for hen feed about 25 years ago. Live
oysters have been found in the Damariscotta
river within the last century. They have since
been planted and while they live they do not
increase. It is believed that the wearing away
of some natural obstruction caused the water
to flow back and forth faster, reducing the
temperature. Shells are found along the bank
on both sides of the river for a mile or more,
but the greatest deposits are at the point shown.
Several complete skeletons with skulls show-
ing very low mentality have been unearthed.
Even in their present state the heaps are of
great interest and attract many vistitors. They
are easily accessible by rail. Summer visitors
in Bristol can easily reach them by water.
