Additional Details:
This picture shows the depth and arrangement of the shell heaps at Damariscotta, the greatest kitchen midden known. This deposit was prehistoric. Throughout were ashes, stone implements, pottery and bones of all kinds, even human. The heaps were partially exploited for hen feed about 25 years ago. Live oysters have been found in the Damariscotta River within the last century. They have since increased. It is believed that the wearing away of some natural obstruction caused the water to flow back and forth faster, reducing the temperature. Shells are found along the bank on both sides of the river for a mile or more, but the greatest deposits are at the point shown. Several complete skeletons with skulls showing very low mentality have been unearthed. Even in their present state the heaps are of great interest and attract many visitors. They are easily accessible by rail. Summer visitors in Bristol can easily reach them by water
