OUR CHURCH
Organized in January 1920 in the heart of north
Baton Rouge, Istrouma Baptist Church claims as its
metropolitan ministry "Calling the Capital City to
the Compassionate Christ."
The names "Istrouma" and "Baton Rouge" are
closely related, not only because of the influence
of this great church upon the life of the city, but
because both actually have the same meaning:
"Istrouma" is the Indian word for "red stick" and
"Baton Rouge" is its French equivalent. Rich in
Indian lore, the capital city of Louisiana was so
named by French explorers who sighted the blood-
stained tree which marked the division between
the hunting grounds of two long-ago Indian tribes
and exclaimed, "le baton rouge!" True to the
meaning of its name, Istrouma Baptist Church
unceasingly seeks to proclaim the Christ who gave
His life on the blood-stained tree of Calvary.
