220128. About 500 foreign residents of Tampico
fled here for safety during the rain of cannon ball
and rifle shot which fell over the city as the Huerta
forces repulsed the Rebel attack on the city. It
was from this neutral zone on the Tampico beach
that the U. S. gunboats "Chester," "Wheeling"
and "Tacoma "conveyed the refugees to the battle-
ships "New Jersey," "Rhode Island" and "Vir-
ginia," lying outside the harbor.
