The Museum had its origin in 1753, with the purchase
of the library and collections of Sir Hans Sloane, numerous
additions have since been made, including the court-
yard, the site now extends to seven acres. In front the
Museum has an Ionic Colonnade of 44 columns. The
Reading Room, one of the latest additions, constructed
1854-7, at a cost of £150,000, occupies the central
quadrangle; it is an imposing circular hall, covered by a
large dome of glass and iron, 140 feet in diameter, and 106
feet high. There is accommodation for 458 readers. T
