During the Battle of Springfield in the American
Revolution this church was subjected to heavy fire
and is known all over the country as the church of
the militant parson, James Caldwell, who during a
shortage of gun wadding ran out with hymnals and
uttered his famous remark, "Give 'em Watts, boys!"
The Parsonage, Union, N. J. (1782) original build-
ing burned by the British after murder of Hannah
