TROY, N.Y.
BIRTHPLACE OF THE
GIANTS
WHEN TROY BETCHED FROM THE NATIONAL LEAGUE THE MOST
OF LES PLAYERS WENT TO THE W.Y. GOTHAM, RENAMED THE CIANTS
UNE (BECAUSE OF THE YER TALL TROT FLAYERS") AND
EVENTUALLY MOVED TO SAN FRANCESCO IN 1903.
Back:
Nostalgic and impressive, the Baseball Monument was dedi-
cated June 6, 1992 in a day-long festive occasion of vendors,
period dress, round ball and a 2-0 NL exhibition game victory
by Troy over Worcester. A crowd of 2000 witnessed Troy's own
"Field of Dreams".
The monument chronicles Troy's baseball heritage from the
1860's:
Unions of Lansingburgh 1866-1870
Troy Haymakers, National Assn., 1871-1872
Troy Cities, National League, 1879-1882
Hall of Famers (5) who played for Troy
Hall of Famers born in Troy (Johnny Evers, Roger "King" Kelly)
Major League players from Troy 1871-present
Sale of franchise to NY Gothams, later the NY and SF Giants
Troy, NY, Honorary member of National League since 1882
Easiest access: 103 St. to Knickerbacker Arena, left to end of
parking lot, about 200 feet straight ahead. Worth the visit.
