Dear Senator Stevens:
Thank you for holding hearings on North Pacific drift-
nets and for supporting restrictions on driftnets to
protect U.S. fish resources, seabirds and marine
mammals.
As you know, hundreds of thousands of seabirds and
marine mammals are killed annually in these foreign
driftnet fisheries. Foreign fishing fleets are even
allowed to use these nets in U.S. waters, where our
own fishermen are not.
With the new agreement between Japan and the U.S.,
recently concluded by the State Department, the killing
in our waters will probably increase. Fishing effort will
be concentrated in our Fishery Conservation Zone,
closer to our fish stocks and to the islands where sea-
birds breed.
I hope I can count on you to continue your efforts to
achieve meaningful protection of our marine resources.
Sincerely,
