The State Capitol building at Montgomery,
Ala. The central portion, of which Stephen D.
Button was the architect, was built in 1850,
the south wing in 1907 and the north wing in
1911. In this building the Confederate govern-
ment was organized in 1861, and Montgomery
remained the capital of the Confederacy until
1862, when it was removed to Richmond, Va.
